  • Mini Red Cliff

Poxi Rock, also named Gufu Rock, is composed by two rocks standing opposite to each other on the main and minor ridges at a distance of about one hundred meters.  The rock on the north looks like a slim and graceful young lady with the head cut. The other on the south is like an old woman on her knees. They stand of different height and vivid in features and expression.  According to the research, this landscape came into being mainly due to weathering, erosion and gravitational collapse of volcanic rocks on the ridge. Legend has it that a long time ago, a widowed mother lived with her only son. Three days after his marriage, the son was taken to perform military service at the frontier. The unfilial daughter-in-law maltreated her mother-in-law so frequently that the thunder God thought it intolerable and had her head cut off. As the first view in sight upon entering Xiandu Scenic Area, it is also called Mother and Daughter-in-Law Greeting Guests.

Jiujiao Rock, also named Xianshi Rock, is combined by two rocks standing next to each other on the Lion and Leopard Ridge in Xiayang Village. The smaller rock in the front is like a strong man with a bundle on the back, and the bigger rock in the rear looks like a sedan. The rock stands opposite to Poxi Rock across the river. According to the legend, the younger brother of the daughter-in-law carried the sedan to take her home for relaxation after hearing of the disorder between his sister and her mother-in-law. On his way, he witnessed that the thunder struck the head of his sister to the ground. Sad and frightened, the younger brother was petrified into a rock together with the sedan, which turned into the current Jiujiao Rock.

Mini Red Cliff was called White Rock in ancient times. It is a precipitous cliff spanning 650 meters east-westward and standing 60 meters in height across the river in Xiayang Village. Alternating red with white, the wall of the cliff seemed to be in flame when people gaze afar. It is just like the Red Cliff on the Yangtze River. Being smaller in size, it is named Mini Red Cliff. On the cliff, theres inscription of Xiao Chi Bi (Mini Red Cliff) with signature of Yinhai, a magistrate of the Ming Dynasty whose name is Gong Tingbin. Originally fractured in northeast direction, surface of the rock was exposed after collapsing due to stream erosion and weathering. Thus, this spectacular view came into being.

Dragon-plowing Road

There is a natural stone corridor spanning across the steep Mini Red Cliff. Dangling dozens of meters above the water surface, the corridor is about 400 meters in length, 1-3 meters in width and 2-3 meters in height. Through millions of years weathering and water erosion, tuff rock of the cliff surface turns into the current stone corridor. Legend has it that Liu Xiu, emperor of the Eastern Han Dynasty, was once chased by army of Wang Mang before he proclaimed himself emperor. He was cornered here with precipice ahead and pursuing forces behind. Just at the moment, a golden dragon leaped out of Haoxi River and paved a stone corridor across the steep cliff to help him out. There came the name Dragon-plowing Road.

Fairy Bulletin Rock

On Mini Red Cliff, there are many tadpole-like characters which are illegible due to natural erosion over the time. People thought it the bulletin written by fairies and called it Fairy Bulletin. The rock where the bulletin is posted is called Fairy Bulletin Rock. There are many inscriptions of past dynasties on the cliff. At present, the 8 existing ones are all famous for their length including Eulogy of Small Penglai by Wang Zhi, a poet of the Southern Song Dynasty and Travel Notes of Xiandu Peak by Yuan Mei, a famous litterateur of the Qing Dynasty.

Small Penglai

There is a clear pond named Kun in front of Mini Red Cliff. With many grotesque stones piled in artistic disorder and islands covering with shade of willows and maples interspersed over the shimmering water, it makes people feel as if they were in fairy isles when they find the views change in every move. Hence it got the name Small Penglai, a fairy isle in the fable. According to the legend, eight immortals used to have a rest here. As a result, the Eight Immortals Pavilion was built in the east of the Small Penglai. The film Monk Comes down the Mountain was ever shot here.

Eight Immortals Pavilion

It is a stone pavilion below the Mini Red Cliff. The pavilion stands 5 meters in height with 8 pillars, 4 corners and single-eave gable and hip roof. There are two vivid statues of the immortals on each corner. The name of the pavilion by Sha Menghai, a famous Chinese calligrapher in the 20th century was inscribed on its plaque. It is said the eight immortals used to travel and have a rest at the Mini Red Cliff and had left many beautiful tales. Many films and TV series, including the Legend of Eight Immortals, Investiture of the Gods and Princess Weiyoung were ever shot here.

Cloudy Pass, commonly known as Clasp-hands Rock or Clasp-hands Cave, is on the north of the Eight Immortals Pavilion. It is formed when a slumped giant rock leaning again the cliff. With upper parts folded and lower parts separated, it is just like two palms putting together. The surface of the inner wall is flat as if being shaved. Covering an area of about 60 square meters, the cave is perfect for tourists to take a break since it is warm in the winter and cool in the summer. On its southern cliff are inscriptions of Cloudy Pass by Yin Hai of the Ming Dynasty and on the north side are cliff inscriptions of “Cloud Pass of Red Cliff” by Wang Jinshan of the modern times. The story goes that its sunny in the south of the cave but cloudy and misty in the north when the Yellow Emperor ascended to the heaven. Due to this frequent bizarre scene, it was so called Cloudy Pass by ancient people.

Alchemy Room

Kunyan Fairyland, the relic of an ancient alchemy room, was originally located in the northeast of Dragon-plowing Road. Currently, a new site has been built about dozen steps away in the southeast. Zheng Rubi, alias Kunyan, was expelled from the capital in 1579. In the following year, he resigned from the post of chief provincial judge of Guangdong and retired from the world. He made friends with Taoist Master named Ge in Xiandu. When Ge wanted to build an alchemy room on Fairy Bulletin Rock, Zheng helped to chisel step on the cliff. He built a room against the cliff at the end of Dragon-plowing Road and praised it Super Excellent. The late generations engraved Kunyan Fairyland on the wall of the cave.

Big-belly Rock

The rock stands at the northeast end of Mini Red Cliff. It is 55 meters in height with a circumference of approximately 100 meters. Owing to its small head and round belly like a drum, the rock got its current name.  Legend has it that Yellow Emperor once placed a jade utensil for endless supply of rice at Mount Haoshan when he was making pills of immortality. One day, a gluttonous immortal kept eating the rice in the utensil until his belly was bulgy. After managing to cross the river, he could not move anymore and was turned into a Big-belly Rock. On the rock, there are brownish black tail-shaped water marks dating back to ten millions years ago. They are like the lower hem of the farmers’ coir rain cape; therefore, it has another name Rain Cape Rock.
